November 1: Today was my first day at my field and I really liked it! The class I have been put into is a very welcoming environment and the teacher (Mrs. Aikins) is very kind and inviting. Her students are very engaged in the class which made me see why lots of educators say elementary school students are some of the best to teach because they are so open to new things and wanting to learn. I think that this will be a great experience!
November 3: When I came to the class, the students were able to do math windows and continue learning their lesson that they had started on the first day of my field experience. I was able to continue to observe the classroom and talk to my cooperating teacher about what I would like to get out of the experience and future plans of things I can do. Next time, I hope to start working with the students.
November 7: Today I was able to do a one on one with one of the students struggling in the class. I really liked doing this because I felt like I could help the student and I think he did understand more afterwards. At first I was kind of nervous to do this because I did not want to make him more confused, but I think I did well with it.
November 9: I was able to grade papers today. I really enjoyed doing that, but her way of grading confused me so I did the best I could with it. After that, I was able to help one of the students that were struggling since they were doing partner work. It was the same student as before so I liked helping him again.
November 15: Today, I was able to work with small groups and help them understand the material more. I really liked this because it gave me a better feel of what it may be like to deal with a class. When you have a classroom of 20+ students and you as the only teacher, I realized how hard that may be considering I had a hard time helping 5 students.
November 17: Today the class was taking their chapter test, so I was able to talk to my cooperating teacher for the time that I was there. We talked about everything from personal hobbies, college, and the classroom in general. It was a good discussion and I got a better sense of direction as to what I may want to do as far as applying for colleges, etc.
November 21: When I first got there, the students were doing their math windows, so I made their report card rewards to give out. Following this, I worked with a small group of struggling students and was able to manage it much better this time. I felt like I had a better feel for how to help the students in the simplest, must constructive way possible and I feel like they understood me a lot better.
November 29: Today I was able to work with a small group once again. I felt like I was not able to help them to my full potential because I never really grasped the concept of what they are learning about. Out of the 4 students that were working with me, I believe only one understood how to do it better and the other 3 continued to struggle. I hope next time I can be a better help and next class I plan on leading the warm up and working with the class as a whole.
December 1: Today I worked with small groups and was able to do better with helping the students. I was more familiar and understanding of the material and was able to offer a lot more information to the students. I felt a lot more confident in myself today.
December 13: Today I was able to go over the homework with the students. It was a different approach for me since I've never done this before. I was kind of nervous, but felt relieved once I did it and I was glad that I did. It gave me a feel for what it is like speaking in front of a whole class. I would like to do this more often.
December 14: Today I was able to work with small groups and within the group of students I was working with, there were many different types of personalities that I needed to find a way to work with. There was a girl that was very quiet, a boy who was very quiet and did not speak at all, and one boy that talked nonstop. To be able to get to them each equally, I tried to work with them individually since I realized the two students would most likely not speak. It was challenging, but I made it work.
December 15: I was able to do a one on one with a student that was not understanding the material. The student often leaves during class to go to an outside source for assistance with something than returns. He was not understanding the material and was not really motivated to trying to understand the material when I was trying to help him either. It was really frustrating and I tried to find ways for him to answer the questions so that he could at least get his work done.
December 19: In my small group today we were able to get a lot of work done and the students were able to understand the material better. I felt better about how I explained things and would like to do something as a whole class again soon.
December 20: Today was an easier day for the students and myself. Since they were about to start break, it was a leisure day of partner work that I got to help them with. It was also a challenge for me since it had to do with logic problems, but the group working with me and I were able to figure it out.
January 3: Returning back today for field experience was really difficult after the long break. I had not gotten much sleep the night before so I was really tired throughout the whole day. Other than being tired I was able to do individual help and small group work and grade.
January 4: Today I worked with small groups and was able to reinforce the skills that they had learned. I was also able to grade papers and answer lots of questions throughout the class. I really enjoyed this because many of the students never really asked me questions before and I liked that they felt comfortable enough to start.
January 5: I was able to help the student that came into class late. He is never really motivated to doing his work so it was frustrating trying to get him to do it. He would continuously stray off topic, but I managed to get him to finish his work so I'm satisfied by that.
January 10: I was able to work with small groups today. A new student was recently added to the class and he was working with me in the small group. He was continuously asking off topic questions and started influencing the other students in the group to do the same. I tried compromising with them to get their work done then they could talk.
January 12: Today I was able to work with small groups and do planning for my formal observation with my cooperating teacher. While planning I was kind of nervous because she suggested going over the warm up which I had not really done before.
January 17: Today I was able to make final adjustments to my Formal Observation Lesson Plan with my cooperating teacher and work with small groups. I tried making better habits today during group work by practicing asking different questions and forcing problem solving.
January 18: Today I had my formal observation and I felt like I was very prepared. I felt very confident in myself going into the lesson. The night before I made sure I knew all of the material I would be going over and how I would go about going over it with the class. Come time Block 7/8, I started to get somewhat nervous. Overall, I felt like my Formal Observation went very well, but not as I anticipated.
January 19: Today I was able to help students in small groups and was able to help students do online work. I felt like this was a time for "me to shine" since the students and Mrs. Aikins were not familiar with the new Chrome Books since they are very different from normal laptops.
January 20: Today was an easier day. My cooperating teacher did not realize I was coming today so there was nothing planned for me to do. The students took a benchmark for the semester and I was given time to work on my projects.
January 24: Today was my last day working with my cooperating teacher and the class this semester. Since I will not be going over there as often anymore I felt like there was a lot of mixed emotions going into today. I was relieved that it was over because having to constantly dress up took a toll on me waking up in the morning. I also felt upset that it was the end because I really enjoyed the students in the class that I was put with.
