I was very excited about meeting my class! Going into the class I somewhat had an idea of what I was getting into with the special needs students. When I got there, Mrs. Yago introduced me and I automatically feel in love with the students. As I went through the day I got to know each and everyone of the students. Mrs. Yago explained to me the challenges and joys of her classroom!

Today I worked with them 1 on 1 for the first time! I loved this because it showed me exactly each students' difficulties and could see these first hand! I helped them create a calendar and get to know days of the week. This was so special for me because it showed how some students are still struggling with their numbers whereas other students understood the calendar right off the bat. I am very eager to continue working with them at their individual pace.

Today was very slow because they're only 9 students in the class to begin with and 3 were absent. After their recess 5/6 students went to OT and speech. In the meantime, I practiced reading with Bobby! He read 6 books in total!

    1. Bobby struggled at first with basic words such as "it" and "then" but excelled with more difficult words such as "penguins." By the last 2 books he had no trouble at all!

I continued to work with them 1 on 1 with calendars. I really love all the students because they are all so unique. It is kind of challenging working with them because they are all on such different levels. Mrs. Yago gave me questions to start asking them to give them a better comprehension of the calendars.

Today we learned some sign language which the kids seemed to be very interested in! I continued working with the students with calendars and they are progressively getting better! Towards the end of the period I helped them on the computers and they asked me some questions they had trouble with and I felt so special because they chose to ask me instead of their assistant teacher Mrs.Terry.

We began coins! We first watched a video and this helped the auditory learners because they made it into a song! The students really enjoyed this, they even kept singing the song. I took them 1 on 1 and began asking what about the coins they knew to get a baseline.

I continued to take them 1 on 1 to work with coins and they seemed to know a lot more! I asked them some more questions Mrs. Yago prepared in order to see if they are comprehending what I am teaching them. Mrs. Yago and I discussed when I can do a lesson by myself and we discussed maybe Monday? I am thinking about how to approach this.

Today I was very surprised by what happened. Mrs. Yago took a small math group and while she was doing that it seemed very stressful. This is because she was working with the students in front of her then there was a student yelling her name asking to go to the bathroom and there was another kid yelling to ask her a question. While I was watching this happen, I took notice of how she handled this situation and kept her composure.

    1. I want to see more reflection in all of your posts. How did she handle it? Could she have done better? How would you have handled it? Think of these questions as you reflect on each day.

Today was much better! All the students seemed to be more calmed down than yesterday. I noticed how much more productive we can be when everyone is calm. I only had time to take Bobby and he did awesome! I realized he tries to answer extremely quick however he usually gets it wrong when he does this. I have to constantly remind him to take his time and then he gets it right.

Today I was very impressed with the students because we learned sign language! I was amazed by how much they knew and they were so eager to teach me! I however took sign language in the middle school but it was a nice refresher! I really think the students love learning sign language considering how intrigued they were through the lesson.

Going into class today I was some-what in a bad mood because I did not have a good day. However, I had to quickly turn it around because I remembered how much these students idolize me so I could not let that reputation tarnish. Once I got to class the students really turned my mood around and made my day much better. Today I learned no matter what happened before class you have to let go because it would not be fair to the children to be upset.

I had an amazing day today because I really feel like I taught Brianna something. Not so much on her math skills but more so in life. When she told me why her brother was annoying her I feel like I could connect with her on a more personal level. This touched me because I could relate and give advice to her since we both have brothers. Today was a day I will never forget.

Today was not as good of a day. When I took the,m 1 on 1 all the students didn't seem to understand what I was teaching them. I tried to explain the coins to them the way I learned them but they were not understanding! So after I realized I reevaluated and taught it a different way. Once I made a few changes it was like a light bulb went off in their mind and I felt so accomplished. It is days like this that make me so excited to come back!

Today was a very long day. All of the students were very lethargic since it was the first day back! While teaching them math we started with a video to stimulate their brain. The website was called Gonoodle and I thought it was amazing because kids were the ones practically running it. I feel as though the kids could relate to this. In the video the children were dancing and you were told to mock their moves. After the video the children had much more energy and we could finally learn math. This website was extremely helpful because it is times like these when we need it most.

Today was my formal lesson! I think it went great because everything went smoothly and the students got the objective. I think my order of events were perfect because it started it off getting the children to sing along to a video then get them interactive with the lesson. Overall I am very happy with the way that my lesson was presented.

Today I mainly worked with Brianna and she was a little too talkative today. I tried to limit the talking and focus more on her math and it worked when I bribed her with talking time after math. I said if she were to do 10 math problems we could chit chat and this helped her immensely. I made sure all her math was correct beforehand and then she would get her reward. This maybe wasn't the best thing to do because it isn't learning related. However, that was the only thing that would motivate her. Maybe I could try using tickets instead.

Today was such a wonderful day because all the kids were on point! They were answering correctly and not calling out! While Mrs. Yago was teaching I was giving the kids Class Dojo points throughout the lesson. Points are Mrs. Yago's reward system and I think it really pushes the kids to do better! I think this because the students parents can see their points so that gives them an extra push knowing their parents can see. You could also use this as a discipline system and take away points.

I realized today how much I love going over to FWS. Right when I walk into the class they all scream my name and hug me, this makes me feel like I am their favorite person in the world (even though I know I am.) But i guess little kids have the power to do that, make you feel like you are the most special person to them. When I walk through the room they all watch me like I am some giant or something. I have noticed that they always ask me questions about how old I am and why do I have so many books. I have really created such a nice relationship with all the sweetest and naive children.

I am sad because this experience is almost over. I talked with Mrs. Yago and discussed some days that I could come back. She told me every day 3 after my school day would work so that's when I plan on going back! I also took the kids back 1 on 1 and once again reviewed coins. They are really understanding them now and I am very impressed with their progress. I did a post test going along with coins and those results were amazing! They all improved by at least 3 questions! I was very proud of each and every student.

Today we did sign language again! We reviewed the family chapter again and they loved it because they told me they taught their family the signs! I think this is really good for them to learn because they can communicate in another way. After we reviewed I went in front of the class and did a general review. I would give them the sign and they would tell me the word, and then I would say the word and they would have to sign it. I thought that it was good that I switched up the way I assesed them that way their brain can think critically and switch up the normal learning process.

Today I was extremely sad because it was my last day! When I first walked in they all screamed my name and handed me a gift. I was very thankful for it and I am so sad! I truly realized how much I enjoy spending time and teaching these kids. They really are such a great group of kids that genuinely want to learn. After today I am considering going over during lunch and advisory because I will miss them!
